Man-free city

17/12/2021 11:04

A sweet voice of a muazina wakes me up at 7 am. There is a string quartet accompanying the Azan. I have been waiting for this group after it was announced in the azan monthly schedule. I have a coffee and a shower to wash away the hungover from last night. The weather is hot but with a little fresh wind. I pick up my yellow dress and get ready to head to work.

I leave my house at exactly 7:58. The bus comes at 8 as announced, the station is right next to my house. Samiha, the driver, greets me with a smile. In the bus, screens show the news of Cairo, a new consensus in the people’s ruling committees, to fund the renovation of the solar panels on top of each building inside of Cairo. The bus stops to allow a group of children to cross the street near my station. I arrive in tahrir, my work is on the other side, the island of Zamalek which is a vehicle free place, I must go on foot.

I take a walk towards Qasr al Nil bridge, I notice a group of women taking photos with the statues of cats now on each side of the bridge. On tahrir’s side, one statue is of a cat standing and the other of a cat lying down. The bridge is full of women, crossing to Zamalek on foot. It’s a hot day, so some women have brought their inflatable water resistant bag with them, they take a short break, take of their clothes, and put it in the bag, which inflates to be in the shape of a ball. They jump in the nile and take a little swim. Walking is a great pleasure, the air is pure because there is so many trees now, and no individuals cars. I finally arrive at my work.

My work has just created a new product, a small water melon with thin easily peeled skin. After I graduated from the school of genetic engineering, I dedicated my time to creatr new types of fruit. There was a high demand for a smaller, easier and more practical water melon, now that Cairo has been announced a men-free city.

Cairo has become an autonomous man-free city, surrounded by a belt of smaller man inhabitant villages. Around those villages, are fields where men work in agriculture and also football fields, that are running non-stop matches.

Tonight my flatmate maya has a date, she will go meet her boyfriend Youssef, They will go out in the pleasure belt, where men and women can still hangout together. Youssef has been trying to convince her to move to Tanta, where they can still marry and form a family following the ancient tradition. It’s hard for her to love someone who is always so nostalgic of bringing home big, heavy watermelons.
